The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
