Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these treatments need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication report a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
